Nearly two-thirds of mums want to retrain for new careers

Flexible study options help mums achieve career goals
Nearly two-thirds (64%) of mums with children aged 0-5 would consider retraining for a new career, according to research by The Open University (OU). However, challenges like childcare costs, time constraints, and guilt often hold them back.

Childcare costs and career guilt

The study reveals that 45% of mums worry about childcare costs when thinking about their careers. Over two in five (42%) feel guilty about leaving their children, while 40% struggle to juggle work, childcare, and personal relationships.

These pressures leave many mothers unable to prioritise their own career ambitions, despite their willingness to upskill.

The demand for flexibility

Flexible learning emerges as a critical motivator. Almost half (47%) of mums surveyed said part-time or remote study options would inspire them to retrain. Financial support (46%) and affordable tuition fees (25%) are also essential.

The OU’s flexible courses address these needs, allowing mums to fit learning around their family schedules without sacrificing quality time.

A campaign to empower mothers for new career

The OU’s Mumentum initiative supports mums ready to reignite their careers. It includes practical tools, such as a social media guide for balancing study with parenting, and a bold campaign to challenge societal perceptions of motherhood.

Aspiring teacher and OU student Althea Hector shares her journey:

“The Open University gave me the chance to study towards my dream of becoming a teacher while being there for my son. I don’t have to choose between my child and my ambitions.”

Career opportunities for mums

The most appealing sectors for retraining include healthcare, education, and IT. The OU provides accessible pathways to these industries, helping mothers turn their skills into meaningful careers.

Josie Fraser, Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the OU, believes mothers have untapped potential. She states:

“Motherhood equips women with valuable transferable skills like multitasking and problem-solving. With the right support, mums can overcome the barriers holding them back.”

Mumsnet backs the initiative, highlighting how flexible learning can tackle the “Motherhood Penalty” many face.
