Exciting February Events for Families at National Museums Liverpool

Discover a spectacular line-up of events this February at National Museums Liverpool, where families can celebrate Lunar New Year, LGBTQ+ History Month, and explore fascinating exhibitions. With vibrant cultural festivities, hands-on workshops, and engaging exhibitions, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Kick off the Lunar New Year in style at the Lady Lever Art Gallery with a spectacular celebration on Saturday 15 February. Experience the rich heritage of Wirral’s Chinese community with traditional dance performances by the Wirral Chinese Cultural Association, insightful talks on the Zodiac Race by BBC Merseyside’s Billy Hui, and creative Chinese New Year card craft workshops for the whole family.

At the Museum of Liverpool, families can enjoy Little Lion Dance Workshops with China Spirit UK on Saturday 15 February. Children can learn how to operate life-size lion puppets and play traditional drum rhythms, while discovering the history of this ancient tradition.

National Museums Liverpool is proud to celebrate LGBTQ+ History Month with a diverse programme of exhibitions, talks, and workshops.

At the Museum of Liverpool, explore The Holly Johnson Story, an exhibition running until July, marking the 40th anniversary of Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s iconic album, Welcome to the Pleasuredome. Discover the life and legacy of Holly Johnson, from his rise to fame as an openly gay musician to his journey through the challenges of HIV and the media spotlight.

Book onto The Holly Johnson Story Curator Tours for exclusive insights into his life and work. Dive into LGBTQ+ hidden languages at the Queer Codes: Polari and Hidden ‘Gay Language’ Workshop on Saturday 23 February, where participants will explore how queer communities communicated through coded language. Get hands-on at the Queer Sew and Sew Embroidery Workshop on Saturday 15 February, an inclusive and creative space for embroidery enthusiasts of all skill levels.

Running until May 2025, Bees: A Story of Survival is an unmissable exhibition at World Museum. This immersive experience blends art and science to highlight the incredible role of bees in our ecosystem. Featuring interactive displays, sculptures, projections, and a live beehive soundscape, this exhibition is perfect for families – and kids under 11 go free!

Inspiring Art at Walker Art Gallery

Discover Conversations, an ambitious exhibition featuring over 40 Black women and non-binary artists shaping contemporary British art. This thought-provoking exhibition explores themes of identity, joy, and cultural transformation through paintings, sculptures, and video installations.

Experience the power of history through Stitching Souls: Threads of Silence, a moving installation by Karen McLean, featuring 132 handmade quilted heads in remembrance of the enslaved Africans who perished in the Zong Massacre of 1781.

Families can get creative with Craft & Create Sessions at Walker Art Gallery during the school holidays, where children can enjoy ‘make and take’ craft activities with expert facilitators.
