Asda new school programme in West Yorkshire

Asda has introduced an exciting school engagement programme, targeting students across primary, secondary, and college levels. The initiative, being trialled in West Yorkshire, focuses on helping young people develop career skills and engage with their communities.

A year-long initiative

The programme runs for the entire academic year, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Students will explore important topics such as food waste, a circular economy, and inclusivity. This initiative aims to equip students with real-world knowledge and hands-on experiences that encourage personal development and community involvement.

A tailored programme for each age group

Asda has designed a three-tiered approach to ensure that the activities are age-appropriate and engaging.

  • Asda Heroes: Primary school pupils will work with their local Community Champions to understand sustainability challenges like food waste and hunger. They will learn how these issues affect their local communities and will create projects that aim to improve their area.
  • Asda Futures: Secondary school students will participate in a “concept to shelf” project. This initiative will allow students to discover the various hidden careers within the chain, with a special focus on creating a sustainable vegan product. The programme encourages the development of critical skills like teamwork, public speaking, and problem-solving.
  • Asda Leaders: College students will face real-world business challenges. Through a “Dragons’ Den” style presentation, they will address industry-wide issues such as equality, diversity, inclusion, and sustainability. Asda mentors will guide students, helping them gain insight into different business functions and participate in mock assessments.

Encouraging new talent

The programme gives students from disadvantaged backgrounds the opportunity to discover hidden career paths. Asda hopes to inspire a new generation of talent in the food and drink industry, which is vital for its future growth.

Chief People and Corporate Affairs Officer, Hayley Tatum MBE, said: “Through this programme, we aim to inspire students to tackle global issues while also showcasing the wide range of careers available at Asda and across the food and drink industry.”

Building on success

This latest programme builds on Asda’s commitment to education and community support. Recently, they raised over £2.5 million for primary schools through its Cashpot for Schools initiative, where shoppers contribute 0.5% of their shop to a chosen school via Asda Rewards.
