Where do the royal family visit over winter?

Ever wondered where the royal family enjoys their winter holidays? From skiing in Switzerland to sunbathing in Costa Rica, here’s a peek into their favourite destinations.

King Charles and Queen Camilla – Australia

This October, King Charles III and Queen Camilla head to Australia for a tour filled with royal duties. As Head of the Commonwealth, King Charles has visited Australia 17 times. While their trip focuses on the environment and climate change, it is expected they will enjoy some downtime too.

In the past, they have been spotted on Broadbeach, soaking up the sun, and King Charles even surfed Bondi Beach in 1981. It’s clear that Australia is a much-loved spot for the King and Queen.

Prince William and Kate – Norfolk

While some royals head abroad, the Prince and Princess of Wales prefer to stay in the UK during the winter months. Their royal residence, Anmer Hall in Norfolk, is a peaceful retreat for the family. Known as their “favourite place,” they often spend half-term holidays there, enjoying the serene Norfolk countryside.

During Christmas 2023, William and Kate spent much of their time in Norfolk. It is likely they will do the same this year, soaking up family time in their beloved holiday home.

Prince Harry and Meghan – Costa Rica

Last December, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle jetted off to Costa Rica for a family holiday with Archie and Lilibet. Staying in the exclusive Montebello area, the Duke and Duchess enjoyed the natural beauty and tropical surroundings.

Costa Rica offers the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation, with activities like hiking through waterfalls and visiting sloth sanctuaries. With December temperatures around 25-30°C, it’s an ideal spot for winter sunshine.

Zara Tindall – Iceland

Zara Tindall and her husband, Mike, enjoyed a romantic winter getaway to Iceland in early 2024. The couple shared moments from their trip on social media, wrapped up in thick coats as they explored Iceland’s icy wilderness.

Iceland is famous for its stunning glaciers and the Northern Lights, which peak during the dark winter months. For those who love adventure, it’s a magical winter destination.

Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie – Verbier, Switzerland

When it comes to winter skiing, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie are regular visitors to Verbier, Switzerland. This luxurious resort is a favourite amongst the royals, offering world-class skiing and opulent chalets.

Though their family sold their chalet in 2022, the sisters continue to visit. Verbier remains the perfect destination for their annual winter escape.
