Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s Squash and a Squeeze has long been a firm favourite with families, and this lively stage adaptation brings the much-loved story to life with warmth, humour and confident storytelling.
From the moment the performance begins, the performers are engaging and expressive, drawing children into the story with ease. The comedy timing is excellent throughout, with visual humour and well-judged pauses that land just as effectively for parents as they do for younger audience members. The pace feels just right, allowing children time to follow the story while keeping energy levels high.
One of the strongest elements of this production is how closely the script reflects the original book, which we loved. Every key moment is recognisable, making it especially reassuring for younger children who enjoy the familiarity of a well-loved story. The rhythm and structure of the book translate beautifully to the stage, making this an ideal first theatre experience.
This Little Angel Theatre and Lowry co-production is adapted by Barb Jungr and Samantha Lane and directed by Samantha Lane. Music and sound design by Barb Jungr enhance the storytelling, while the puppets, designed and made by Maia Kirkman Richards, are a real highlight. The simple but effective set and costume design by Kate Bunce keeps the focus on the performers, supported by sensitive lighting design from Sherry Coenen.
With a running time of one hour and recommended for ages three to eight, Squash and a Squeeze is well suited to young audiences and family outings.
Overall, this is a warm, funny and faithful adaptation that respects the original story and delivers genuine enjoyment for children and adults alike.
