Brought to life by the talented team at Freckle Productions, this joyful stage adaptation transforms everyone’s favourite dragon into a colourful musical packed with catchy songs, delightful puppetry and plenty of laughs. From the moment the curtain rises, young audiences are drawn into Madam Dragon’s school, where the enthusiastic but accident-prone dragon, Zog, tries his hardest to earn a coveted golden star.
The cast delivers energetic performances throughout, with each character bursting with personality. The puppetry is particularly impressive, bringing the dragons vividly to life while allowing children’s imaginations to soar. Joe Stilgoe’s original songs are upbeat and memorable, with many children happily singing along by the end of the show.
Parents will appreciate that the humour works on two levels. There are plenty of visual gags and slapstick moments for little ones, while adults will enjoy the witty dialogue and the heartwarming message about perseverance, friendship and discovering your own strengths.
Running for around an hour without an interval, the production is perfectly paced for younger theatre-goers. The audience interaction keeps children engaged throughout, and the colourful costumes and imaginative staging create a wonderfully immersive experience without ever overwhelming little viewers.
Cadogan Hall also deserves praise as a family-friendly venue. Located just moments from Sloane Square Underground station, it’s easy to reach by public transport, and the theatre offers booster seats, family tickets and accessible performances, including Relaxed and BSL-interpreted shows during the run.
Whether this is your child’s first theatre trip or you’re already regular visitors to family productions, Zog is a charming, funny and uplifting adaptation that captures everything families love about Julia Donaldson’s stories. It leaves children smiling, singing and believing that with determination and kindness, they can achieve great things too.
