The Secret World of Bird Nests is one of those books that manages to take something children see regularly and make them look at it in a completely different way.
Birds and their nests are everywhere, but how often do we actually stop to think about how they are made? This beautifully illustrated book takes young readers on a fascinating journey into the world of bird architecture, showing just how clever birds can be when it comes to building a safe home for their eggs and chicks.
Written by Lucy Menzies and illustrated by Namasri Niumim, the book introduces children to the astonishing variety of nests found around the world. Rather than simply showing the familiar cup-shaped nest made from twigs and grass, it explores the many different ways birds build their homes depending on where they live and how they live.
I particularly liked the way the book introduces children to some of the surprising materials birds can use. Feathers and moss might not come as a huge surprise, but spiders’ silk and sticky spittle certainly make you realise just how inventive these little builders can be!
The illustrations are a real highlight, helping bring the different nests and their ingenious construction techniques to life. It is the sort of book that encourages children to stop, look and ask questions when they are outdoors.
There is plenty here to interest curious children, while the subject also provides a lovely excuse for a family nature walk. Once you’ve read it, you’ll probably find yourself looking up into trees and hedges to see what nests you can spot.
With expert input from Douglas Russell, Senior Curator responsible for the Natural History Museum’s internationally renowned birds’ egg and nest collections, it also has a strong educational element without feeling like a dry textbook.
Parents News verdict: A lovely choice for children aged seven and over who are interested in animals, nature and the world around them. It’s informative, beautifully presented and likely to encourage young readers to become more observant when they’re outdoors.
