A brilliant family day out in London in a place you’d never expect

Mention Wembley Park and most people conjure the image with the arch. Football finals, sell-out concerts, 90,000 fans filing down Olympic Way. But look a bit harder and you find a neighbourhood that has been quietly building into one of the better family day-out destinations in London. There are paid experiences, a free art trail that has gone properly viral, multiple play parks, seven acres of green space, outlet shopping and some genuinely great food options.

We spent a full day working through it and came away with far more than we expected. The best part is that you can be there in 12 minutes from Baker Street on the Jubilee or Metropolitan line, which makes it a genuinely easy call from central London.

The headline experience right now is the Mundo Pixar Experience on Fulton Road, a short walk from the station, and it is something else. The exhibition covers more than 3,500 square metres across 14 Pixar universes, with life-sized recreations of scenes from Toy Story, Monsters Inc., Cars, Coco, Up, Finding Nemo and Inside Out 2 among others.

The Toy Story section in particular is extraordinary. Walking into Andy’s Room feels exactly like being shrunk down and stepping onto the film set as a toy, with every detail scaled and styled to match. The London run is the UK premiere and includes a room not found anywhere else in the world: the Sunnyside Daycare from Toy Story 3, featuring Jessie, Lots-o’-Huggin’ Bear and the Aliens. Each space has its own set design, ambient sound and even specially crafted scents matched to the film it recreates, and the quality throughout is remarkable. Running alongside everything is a Pixar Ball Treasure Hunt, challenging visitors to spot the famous yellow ball with a red star hidden somewhere in each scene, the Easter egg Pixar has been tucking into its films for decades.

For food, we headed to Nando’s in London Designer Outlet and had a lovely meal. The Designer Outlet has a brilliant range of restaurants to choose from, whether you fancy Wagamama, Five Guys, Itsu, Pizza Express or any number of other options, so there is something for everyone regardless of what the family is in the mood for. The outlet shopping is well worth a wander too, with a wide range of stores making it a handy addition to the day.

The free attractions at Wembley Park are genuinely worth planning around rather than treating as an afterthought. The art trail covers 26 works by artists from around the world, from digital light installations to large-scale murals, all free and out in the open year-round. The Taylor Swift murals on the Spanish Steps are still there and still drawing crowds, particularly with older kids and teens. Union Park, the neighbourhood’s seven-acre green space, has multiple play parks including an all-weather one with a wooden train, and Elvin Gardens has a smaller playground for younger children. BOXPARK Wembley runs free arts and crafts sessions which are well worth checking ahead for, and there is also a free covered children’s play area within London Designer Outlet itself.

For families who want more, the options keep coming. Bubble Planet on Fulton Road is a walkthrough sensory experience across 11 themed rooms including an infinity mirror room, UV-lit installations and a giant ball pit. MeetspaceVR brings immersive virtual reality to the neighbourhood, Sixes Social Cricket offers a fun and accessible take on the game that works well for families, and the Macaroni Penguin soft play is a great option for younger children who need to burn off some energy. There is also a 4DX cinema for anyone who wants to round the day off with a film.

Put it all together and it really is a full day out without having to work very hard to fill it. The Pixar experience alone is worth the trip, but the sheer range of things to do at Wembley Park, across all ages and budgets, makes it one of the most versatile family day-out destinations in London right now. The football stadium is still there if you need it.
