Set within a breathtaking four-acre woodland on the Helmingham Estate near Stowmarket, Guildenacre is an immersive new adventure playground designed to spark imagination, curiosity and a deeper connection with nature. Created by world-class playground designers CAP.CO (Creating Adventurous Places), the experience blends imaginative storytelling with adventurous and educational play.

Children of all ages are invited to step into a magical forest world, where a glimmer of gold hints at ancient secrets and four special guardian animals protect the woodland alongside the mystical Whispering Oak Tree. Each of the four play areas is inspired by a different guardian and its natural habitat—whether that means burrowing beneath the forest floor or soaring high among the treetops.

Alongside high-energy play, Guildenacre weaves in learning and discovery. Children can take part in themed activities, including stamp stations that form part of an interactive trail, encouraging exploration at every turn.

Edward Tollemache, custodian of Helmingham and co-founder of Guildenacre with his wife Sophie, said:
“This carefully considered new addition to the Helmingham Estate will offer a mix of challenge, discovery and intrigue for visitors of all ages. Inspired by the estate’s beautiful surroundings and the wildlife found here, you’ll also spot references to our family’s coat of arms, including a magical flying Pegasus, which we hope visitors will enjoy discovering.”

The first area to explore is Flint’s Hollow, instantly recognisable by its bold badger-striped turrets. Home to Flint the Badger, this space is filled with tunnels, burrows and two-storey lookout points. Children can climb to the highest level before swooping back down via a covered, twisting slide.

High in the treetops sits Eira the Owl’s Canopy Keep, where explorers can reach a stargazing deck via rope ladders or wooden walkways. From here, they can scan the skies or send secret messages through the Keep’s talking tubes.

The largest structure, The Elderglade, is watched over by Atlas the Stag. This expansive area features climbing walls, tunnels, ladders, bridges, multi-level walkways and several impressive slides designed for fast-paced fun.

Rounding out the experience is Vex the Vixen’s Ember Den, an adrenaline-fuelled zone featuring a zip line, racing slide, balance beams and ground-level play trails. With elements designed for both older children and younger explorers, it encourages confidence-building and adventurous play.

All four play areas are connected by bark pathways suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs, ensuring accessibility throughout. A dedicated den-building zone invites children to create their own woodland hideouts, while refreshments and toilet facilities will be located within the wood itself.

Celia Deeley, estates director at Helmingham, explained:
“Construction is being carefully managed to minimise disruption to the woodland, protect habitats and safeguard ancient trees. Wherever possible, we’re using estate materials and a wood-themed design that blends seamlessly into the natural surroundings, enhancing the sense of immersion.”

In addition to the playground, modest refreshment and retail facilities will be introduced at the Grade II-listed Wades Barn, which will serve as the main entry point for visitors beginning their Guildenacre adventure.

Edward added:
“Guildenacre will add another exciting dimension to a day out at Helmingham, complementing our Grade I-listed gardens, 400-acre deer park, shops and seasonal events.”

Construction of the adventure playground and a dedicated car park will continue into early 2026, ahead of a planned opening this summer.
