The Rhine Valley in Germany and Alsace in France have tied for first place in a new ranking of the best autumn escapes for UK travellers this October. The Autumn Getaway Index 2026, created by global eSIM provider Holafly, scored destinations on peak foliage windows, harvest festivals and events, and direct flight times from London.
With the window for perfect autumn colour (or “leaf peeping”) notoriously short, the index aims to take the guesswork out of where to go, from quick European hops to bucket-list trips across the Atlantic.
The top 9 autumn escapes for UK travellers
- Rhine Valley, Germany: 100 (joint first)
- Alsace, France: 100 (joint first)
- Tuscany, Italy: 99.2
- New England, USA: 90.5
- Loire Valley, France: 84.6
- Bavaria and the Black Forest, Germany: 84.2
- Douro Valley, Portugal: 83
- Transylvania, Romania: 82.2
- Vermont, USA: 70.3
Short-haul autumn breaks: big views, no jet lag
Europe’s wine regions dominate the index because they offer stunning seasonal scenery just a couple of hours from the UK.
Joint winners the Rhine Valley and Alsace promise golden, terraced vineyards and medieval villages. October grape harvests mean a packed calendar of local food and wine festivals, so there is as much culture to soak up as there are views. According to the index, travellers can leave London in the morning and be sipping Riesling by lunchtime.
Tuscany takes third place. Instead of the blazing reds further north, expect misty cypress-covered hills, roaring log fires and freshly pressed olive oil, all reachable with a short flight to Pisa or Florence.
For something a little different, the Loire Valley, Bavaria, Portugal’s Douro Valley and the moody castles of Transylvania all made the top nine, proving you don’t need to cross an ocean for a distinctive autumn break.
New England: the transatlantic bucket-list trip
Despite the long-haul flight, New England still secured a strong fourth place. Its October foliage, with vibrant red sugar maples set against bright blue skies, is hard to match anywhere in the world.
However, the longer travel time and the road trip connections needed to reach the best spots mean Vermont sits further down the index, in ninth place, because of the extra travel friction for UK visitors.
If you have time for a longer holiday, the USA offers the ultimate autumn road trip. But for a quick weekend fix, or a short family break this October half term, Europe has the edge for UK departures.
