Winter blues: January can feel like a tough month, but research shows that most Brits have go-to ways to lift their spirits. From brisk walks in the park to indulging in Netflix marathons, here are the top activities that help brighten the winter days.

Simple pleasures that make a difference to Winter blues

Fresh air and family time

Spending time outdoors and with loved ones tops the list of mood-boosting activities. Over half (52%) of Brits say a brisk walk in the park or quality family time helps them feel better.

Cosy comforts

Hot baths with bubbles (30%), cosy socks (24%), and snuggling under a blanket (21%) are favourites for staying warm and cheerful. Many also enjoy a steaming cup of tea (19%) or hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows (20%).

Delicious treats

Cooking a Sunday roast (25%), enjoying hot buttered crumpets (16%), or ordering a takeaway (21%) are popular ways to beat the blues.

Entertainment and relaxation

Watching a favourite film (35%), re-reading a beloved book (15%), or bingeing on a Netflix marathon (19%) bring joy to many.

Planning a holiday

One in four Brits (25%) book a winter getaway to lift their spirits. Club Med’s research reveals that 82% of people believe the cold season is the perfect time for a holiday.

Skiing and snowboarding are popular, with a 24% increase in last-minute bookings for January and February 2025. For those craving sunshine, Club Med reported a 30% rise in bookings for winter sun destinations.

Nicolas Bresch, Managing Director at Club Med, explains:
“January is the ideal time to plan a trip. With festivities behind us, families can boost their mood by looking forward to a holiday. We’ve seen a rise in bookings during this period, as people seek to escape the winter gloom.”

With 61% of Brits believing small pleasures are key to happiness, the January blues don’t have to linger. Whether it’s a winter break or a cosy evening at home, there’s a way for everyone to feel brighter.
