A recent survey by Canine Cottages has revealed exactly what dog owners are looking for when planning the perfect break and it’s clear that a truly dog-friendly location is essential.

In fact, a huge 92% of dog owners said they actively search for dog-welcoming areas when booking a holiday, proving that pets are very much part of the family getaway.

To help make holiday planning easier, Canine Cottages has analysed the data to uncover the winning formula for a destination that keeps both people and pups happy—from practical property features to nearby activities and attractions.

What features dog owners look for when booking accommodation

Features Percentage
An enclosed garden 78%
Foot paths within walking distance of the property 51%
Within travelling distance of dog-friendly attractions 31%
Within walking distance of dog-friendly pubs 29%
Secure exercise area/paddock/field 21%

Enclosed Gardens: The Top Priority

When it comes to accommodation, the most important feature by far is an enclosed garden. A significant 78% of dog owners said this was their number one priority when booking a dog-friendly property. It’s easy to understand why having a safe and secure outdoor space where dogs can play, sniff and relax gives both owners and pets peace of mind, especially in unfamiliar surroundings. It’s not just a bonus it’s often the deciding factor in where people choose to stay.

Easy Access to Walks: Location Matters

For 51% of dog owners, having footpaths within walking distance of their holiday accommodation is essential. Being able to head straight out for a walk without needing to drive adds huge value to a stay. With 88% of respondents saying their favourite holiday activity with their dog is walking in rural locations, it’s no surprise that proximity to scenic trails is a key part of the formula. A further 66% also enjoy walking through towns and villages, suggesting that variety in walking route types is another important ingredient.

Nearby Attractions: Dog-Friendly Days Out

Almost a third of dog owners (31%) said it’s important for their accommodation to be within travelling distance of dog-friendly attractions. This might include beaches, country parks, or historical sites that welcome dogs. However, the survey also revealed that 34% of dog owners find locating these kinds of places one of the most difficult parts of planning a dog-friendly holiday. To avoid this, 44% of respondents said they make a point of researching dog-friendly places to visit before they go, underlining how important it is for locations to provide clear, reliable information about what’s available nearby.
