Fostering is everything

Fostering can mean the world to those involved, as highlighted in Stockport Council’s powerful new fostering film, Everything. The film is part of a national campaign to recruit more foster carers in Stockport.

A collaborative project

Stockport Council’s fostering service is part of the national release of Everything, a short film commissioned by the largest collaboration of local councils and children’s trusts across England. Over 100 local authorities have come together to support this initiative, making Everything the seventh and largest film project aimed at promoting local authority fostering.

The national launch of the film took place at the Everyman cinema in Birmingham, and the film is available for viewing here.

Encouraging more foster carers

Cllr Wendy Meikle, Cabinet Member for Children, Families and Education, praised the Everything project for its emotional portrayal of the impact fostering has. She emphasised the importance of recruiting more foster carers, stating:

“The message is the same for all of us – we need more people to step forward and become foster carers. Everything will help us reach more people in our communities and encourage them to explore this rewarding role.”

Stockport Council remains committed to giving vulnerable children and young people the best chance to thrive, which often comes through local fostering families.

A story of lasting impact

Everything follows foster carer Mike and his family on a journey through time, highlighting the enduring relationships between foster carers and the children they care for. The film centres on a surprise 60th birthday party for Mike, where two of his former foster children, Will and Zara, reflect on the difference fostering made to their lives.

The film uses real old camcorder footage to flashback to the 1990s and 2010s, capturing touching moments between Mike and the children he fostered. One key scene shows Mike teaching Zara to play the guitar, which she later performs at his birthday party. The story illustrates the deep connections foster carers can build with the children they care for.

The film’s powerful concluding message encourages viewers to consider how their lives could forever change someone else’s, simply by choosing to foster.
