Step into the Season of Unforgettable Magic: Covent Garden’s Christmas Lights Kickstart a Festive Wonderland
The festive season has officially arrived at Covent Garden, and there’s no better place to immerse yourself in the magic of Christmas. On 12th November, Hollywood actor and Save the Children ambassador Luke Evans, alongside the charismatic Myleene Klass, switched on Covent Garden’s iconic Christmas lights, marking the start of a seven-week extravaganza filled with festive activities, exclusive pop-ups, and incredible dining experiences.
Here’s why Covent Garden is the ultimate destination for your family’s holiday cheer in 2024.
Marvel at Covent Garden’s Enchanting Decorations and Lights
Covent Garden’s famous decorations are back, bigger and brighter than ever. The Market Building is adorned with 40 enormous bells, 12 giant baubles, and 8 spinning mirror balls, creating a dazzling spectacle. The pièce de résistance is the 55ft Norwegian Spruce Christmas tree, draped with 30,000 LED lights and 200 glittering baubles.
New for 2024, Seven Dials is illuminated by 150,000 additional LED lights, including a magical display in Neal’s Yard. Don’t miss the Instagram-famous Santa Sleigh, perfect for capturing family photos.
Exclusive Pop-Ups and Shopping Experiences
Covent Garden is a treasure trove of festive surprises. Visit Jo Malone London’s ‘Christmas Special’ pop-up, where you can spin the prize wheel and explore luxurious holiday scents. Sipsmith’s 1950s gin bus is back, serving festive cocktails and hosting gin masterclasses, while the Thirsty Farrier delights visitors with warming drinks like Baileys White Russians and Gingerbread Espresso Martinis.
For those looking for unique gifts, Bluebella’s pop-up on Floral Street offers exquisite lingerie with personalisation options, and Pretty Lavish provides timeless wardrobe additions at Henrietta Street. Meanwhile, Visit London’s pop-up shop features tickets to iconic attractions and merchandise by local artists.
Save the Children Christmas Shop: Gifts That Give Back
Covent Garden continues its partnership with Save the Children through its pop-up shop on Henrietta Street. Open until 15th December, this store sells beautifully crafted decorations, pre-loved Christmas jumpers, and gifts designed by children benefiting from the charity. Every purchase supports Save the Children’s life-changing work.
Winter Warmer Festival: Seasonal Treats for Everyone
Running until 1st December, the Winter Warmer Festival is a highlight of Covent Garden’s festive programme. Indulge in mulled wine, Mexican hot chocolate, or spiced cider from local favourites like Ladurée and Story Cellar. The Covent Garden Chalet, opening on 29th November, brings alpine vibes with seasonal treats and a fun photo-op in a ski lift.
Festive Dining and Drinks
Covent Garden’s dining scene shines during the holidays. Restaurants like Ave Mario, GAUCHO, and Din Tai Fung offer seasonal menus, while Miracle at Henrietta returns for its seventh year with a kitschy Christmas cocktail bar. For something unique, enjoy festive afternoon teas at The Ivy Market Grill and Ladurée.
Family-Friendly Christmas Fun
Families will love visiting the London Transport Museum, transformed into a winter wonderland with Santa’s interactive sleigh and festive storytelling. The Royal Opera House offers captivating performances of Cinderella and Hansel and Gretel, while nearby West End theatres are perfect for a magical family outing.
