Canadian Pacific

Take a nostalgic ride at The Watercress Line.

Canadian Pacific steam train for enthusiasts and history lovers to now enjoy as The Watercress Line welcomes passengers aboard the newly restored SR Merchant Navy class locomotive, No. 35005 Canadian Pacific.

After years of meticulous restoration, this powerful steam giant returns to the rails next month, offering exclusive rides and a unique journey through railway history.

A tribute to British engineering and wartime resilience

Built in 1941 at Eastleigh Locomotive Works, Canadian Pacific played a crucial role in Britain’s wartime transport network. The locomotive was named after the shipping line that kept Britain supplied during World War II. Post-war, it hauled luxury boat trains, including the Bournemouth Belle and Atlantic Coast Express.

The restoration project has been a labour of love, with over 10,000 volunteer hours dedicated to bringing the locomotive back to its former glory. The National Lottery Heritage Fund generously supported the project, ensuring the preservation of this piece of British railway history.

Be among the first passengers on Canadian Pacific

From 20-23 March, The Watercress Line will offer exclusive rides on the restored Canadian Pacific, allowing visitors to step back in time and experience the golden era of steam travel. This event is part of the Railway 200 celebrations, marking 200 years of railway travel in the UK.

A community effort

Dedicated volunteers, including Steve Wilson and Brian Carter, played key roles in the restoration. Wilson, whose parents worked at Eastleigh Works, shared his personal connection to the project. “Being able to work on Canadian Pacific where my parents once worked is a dream come true,” he said.

CEO of The Watercress Line, Rebecca Dalley, praised the team’s efforts: “This project showcases the dedication of our volunteers and the rich heritage of British engineering.”
