Giant Puppets, Flamingos and a Giant Serpent: Imagining Animals Comes to the Tower of London This Summer

Families visiting the Tower of London this summer can expect a magical surprise as a spectacular new event brings giant animal puppets, music and interactive performances to one of Britain’s most famous landmarks.

Running from 19–31 August 2026 (excluding 25 August), Imagining Animals will transform the historic fortress into a vibrant world filled with extraordinary creatures inspired by the animals that once lived at the Tower’s Royal Menagerie.

Created by acclaimed artists Mervyn Millar and Suzy Willson in partnership with Historic Royal Palaces, the family-friendly experience celebrates the fascinating history of the animals that called the Tower home for more than 600 years.

A Wild Family Adventure

Throughout the day, visitors may encounter a gentle bear wandering across the parade ground, colourful flamingos appearing unexpectedly, butterflies fluttering overhead or even a giant serpent weaving through the crowds. Children can also keep an eye out for a curious wolf cub exploring its surroundings.

Combining puppetry, music, movement and interactive storytelling, the event promises plenty of memorable moments for families exploring the Tower during the summer holidays.

Community Creativity

As part of the project, local community groups have helped create a special art installation featuring handcrafted birds displayed throughout the site. Each bird represents a wish or hope for the future, adding an extra layer of meaning to the experience.

More Than Just the Animals

Alongside the new performances, families can still enjoy everything the Tower of London is famous for. Visitors can join one of the legendary Yeoman Warder (Beefeater) tours, discover stories of kings, queens and prisoners, explore the ancient towers and battlements, and marvel at the Crown Jewels.

The event offers a unique way to experience the Tower, blending history, imagination and creativity while bringing the site’s lesser-known animal heritage to life.

Affordable Family Days Out

Imagining Animals is included with standard Tower of London admission, making it excellent value for families planning a day out in London. Reduced-price £1 tickets are also available for families receiving Universal Credit and certain other means-tested benefits.

After its Tower of London run, selected animal puppets will appear at family-focused community events across East London throughout September, including the Backyard Biennial Festival finale at Whitechapel Gallery on 6 September.

For families looking for an unforgettable summer holiday activity, Imagining Animals promises a unique blend of history, theatre and outdoor adventure in one of London’s most iconic settings.
