Much-loved children’s book The Detective Dog by Julia Donaldson and Sara Ogilvie is heading back to theatres across the UK in spring 2026, as the stage adaptation celebrates its 10th anniversary.

From Wednesday 25 March to Sunday 31 May 2026, Tiny and Tall Productions will tour their magical, accessible production, bringing the story of clever canine Nell to family audiences nationwide. Designed especially with Deaf and hard of hearing children in mind, the show is welcoming, inclusive and packed with puppetry, music and plenty of sensory surprises.

The heartwarming story follows Nell, a remarkable dog with an extraordinary sense of smell and a deep love of stories. Brought to life through beautiful puppetry by Tiny and Tall’s Artistic Director Tessa Bide, Nell helps find everything from missing shoes to hidden fish. But when a book mysteriously disappears from her owner Peter’s school, Nell’s detective skills are put to the ultimate test. Together, Peter and Nell set off on an exciting adventure to uncover the truth.

With toe-tapping music, playful humour and gentle emotional moments, the show celebrates friendship, curiosity and the joy of reading – making it a perfect first theatre experience for young children.

Tessa Bide says:
“We’re thrilled to be bringing The Detective Dog back on tour to celebrate 10 years since this brilliant book was published. The response from audiences last year – deaf and hearing, children and adults – was overwhelmingly positive. We hope this production continues to raise the bar for accessibility in children’s theatre and ensures more families can experience the magic.”

First published in 2016 by Macmillan Children’s Books, The Detective Dog is written by Julia Donaldson CBE, creator of The Gruffalo, Room on the Broom and A Squash and a Squeeze, and illustrated by Sara Ogilvie. The stage version debuted in 2025 and is directed by Peta Maurice, known for her work on national tours of The Gruffalo.

Tiny and Tall Productions are widely recognised for their innovative, inclusive approach to children’s theatre and work closely with Deaf artists to ensure performances are fully accessible. Families attending The Detective Dog can also enjoy an interactive scent activity before the show, encouraging children to “sniff out” clues just like Nell.

The production is supported by Arts Council England and commissioned by ARC Stockton and Barnsley Civic.
