Yuck Yard: a gut-wrenching family event at Chatham Historic Dockyard

Looking for a fun yet disgustingly entertaining way to spend half-term? The Chatham Historic Dockyard has you covered! From 19 October to 3 November 2024, Yuck Yard will be serving up a stomach-churning family experience, packed with interactive activities, gross history, and revolting tales. This all-new event is sure to be the highlight of the Kent and Medway half-term holidays, offering visitors a chance to dive into the grim realities of naval history.

Discover disgusting diseases and creepy cures

Throughout history, sailors faced more than just rough seas and enemy fire. They also battled some truly revolting diseases, and the cures were just as horrifying. At Yuck Yard, families can expect hands-on encounters with the nastiest aspects of naval medicine. Expect stories that will make your skin crawl, from sickly scurvy to gruesome amputations.

Battle of the Bilge: 23 – 31 October 2024

The Battle of the Bilge is one of Yuck Yard’s must-see events. Meet the eccentric Widow Wink, a master of queasy cures and sickening concoctions. From leech therapy to herbal brews, she has everything to make you feel a bit queasy! If you’re feeling brave, you can challenge her to guess which potions cured (or cursed) sailors in days gone by.

On the other side of the battlefield is Assistant Surgeon George Bass, ready to show off his skills in maritime medicine. His demonstrations of 18th-century surgical techniques, including tooth-pulling and limb amputations, will fascinate and horrify in equal measure. Don’t miss their live-action duel for the Yuck Yard Cup, where they’ll compete to see who can concoct the best (or worst!) cure for the era’s nastiest ailments.

The Ratcatcher’s Trail: daily

If you prefer to steer clear of surgery, why not embark on The Ratcatcher’s Trail? Families can sniff out hidden rats while learning about the unappetising foods sailors had to stomach during long voyages. This immersive scavenger hunt is perfect for those eager to learn more about the Dockyard’s more rodent-infested past!

Chatham Historic Dockyard Gallery of Goo: daily

End your day with some splatter-filled fun at the Gallery of Goo. Fire revolting slime vials at a monstrous target and create your own “disaster-piece” to take home. This hands-on activity is perfect for younger visitors who love getting messy.
