The Premier League has launched a new mental health resource aimed at helping children build their self-esteem. The Building Self Esteem resource is now available to over 19,000 primary schools across England and Wales through the Premier League Primary Stars programme.
A resource designed for growth
Released during Children’s Mental Health Week, the free resource offers activities that encourage young people to boost their resilience, embrace new experiences, and practise positive self-talk. It includes insights from mental health experts, teachers, and advice from 10 current Premier League players alongside former England internationals Theo Walcott and Jill Scott MBE.
Theo Walcott inspires young minds and self esteem
To celebrate the launch, Theo Walcott attended a Premier League Primary Stars session at his former club, Arsenal. He surprised pupils by sharing personal stories about his career and the lessons he’s learned. Walcott said:
"I was delighted to support this new resource and share my story. Football connects people, and I know the lessons shared through the Premier League’s programmes will inspire children to grow in confidence."
More than just a game
This launch coincides with the Premier League’s 'More Than A Game' campaign, which highlights the League’s significant investment in football and community programmes. In the 2023/24 season alone, Premier League Primary Stars engaged 1.3 million children. With almost 30 free resource packs focusing on wellbeing, schools have downloaded these materials over 75,000 times.
A lasting impact on education
Premier League Primary Stars, launched in 2017 with Walcott’s support, now reaches 87% of schools in England and Wales. Over 70,000 teachers benefit from its free, curriculum-aligned resources designed for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. The programme collaborates with leading organisations like the National Literacy Trust and the PSHE Association.
Supporting schools and communities
Since 2013, the Premier League has invested £75 million in primary school sports via the Premier League Charitable Fund. Currently, 103 professional football club charities deliver Premier League Primary Stars sessions across the country.
