World Book Day 2025: Exciting Announcements and Plans

World Book Day 2025 is scheduled for 6 March 2025. This annual event celebrates the joy of reading and aims to ensure every child has the opportunity to own a book.

£1/€1.50 Book Selection

A highlight of World Book Day is the release of special £1/€1.50 books that children can obtain for free using their book tokens. The 2025 selection offers a diverse range of titles catering to various reading levels:

  • Beginning Readers: Titles such as The Magic Balloon by Carl Anka and Bluey's Little Book introduce young readers to engaging stories.
  • Early Readers: Books like The Adventures of Paddington: Farm Escape! and Pokémon: The Epic Pocket Guide provide captivating tales for those advancing in their reading journey.
  • Fluent Readers: For more confident readers, options include LEGO® Our Amazing Universe and The Soccer Diaries: Rocky Takes the Lead by Tom Palmer.
  • Independent Readers: Older readers can delve into This Story is a Lie by Benjamin Dean.

Additionally, there are exclusive titles for Ireland and a Welsh-language book, ensuring inclusivity across regions. These books will be available from participating booksellers between 13 February and 23 March 2025.

Resources for Celebrations

To assist families and educators in planning their World Book Day activities, a variety of resources are available:

  • Toolkits: Tailored for primary, secondary, and early years settings, these toolkits offer activity ideas, display materials, and more.
  • Dressing Up Guides: In collaboration with 2025 £1/€1.50 book publishers, guides are provided to create affordable costumes related to the new titles.
  • Competitions: Engaging contests, including the popular "Design a National Book Token" competition, encourage creativity among children.

These resources aim to make the celebration of World Book Day both enjoyable and educational.

Bookshops and Retailers Participation

Over 4,000 booksellers, including more than 400 independent bookshops and major retailers like The Works, WHSmith, Waterstones, Lidl, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, and Asda, will participate in World Book Day 2025. They will host events and activities to inspire children and provide access to the £1/€1.50 books. Children, families, schools, and local communities are encouraged to visit these retailers to choose a book and explore the world of reading.

Fundraising Initiatives

Despite efforts, up to 500,000 children in the UK (1 in 15) do not own a book, a figure that rises to 1 in 10 among children receiving free school meals. World Book Day aims to change this by encouraging fundraising to support its mission. By making a donation or raising funds, individuals can help provide books to children from all backgrounds, fostering a lifelong habit of reading for pleasure.

Looking Ahead

As World Book Day 2025 approaches, organisers are planning events, activities, and partnerships to reach more children than ever before. Given that half a million children in England don’t own a single book, these initiatives are crucial. The 2024 Impact Report highlights the positive effects World Book Day has had on children across the UK, and the 2023–2027 strategy outlines plans to encourage even more children to develop a lifelong love of reading, thereby improving their life chances.
