Blenheim Palace, the UNESCO World Heritage Site near Woodstock, transformed into a world of wonder this October half term, offering a jam-packed programme of spooky fun for families. From ZooLab animal encounters to storytelling, crafts, and circus shows, there was plenty to keep little ones entertained. While some activities were a little too advanced for our toddler, older children were completely captivated, and we still had a fantastic family day out.
Our toddler absolutely loved Adventure Play, which was the standout part of our visit. The area is beautifully designed, full of exciting play zones for all ages, from gentle toddler-friendly sections to daring climbing towers for bigger kids. It felt safe, well-organised, and bursting with energy. The Pip and Posy storytelling sessions and make-a-mask craft workshops were perfect for younger visitors, and the Pip and Posy Rainbow Treasure Hunt added an extra layer of fun as little ones searched for colourful clues around the play area.
The Walled Garden was buzzing with activity. Families could take a ride on Winston, the mini train, before exploring the Marlborough Maze—a real hit with the older children trying to complete it in under ten minutes. The Butterfly House, with its new feeding stations and improved layout, was another lovely stop, giving children a chance to get up close to colourful butterflies.
The ZooLab Potions Show, held inside The Rowse Honey Hive, was an interactive delight. Older children especially loved helping to conjure up “potions” and meeting frogs, snakes, and even spiders, while learning fascinating animal facts along the way. Our toddler watched with wide eyes—though perhaps preferred waving at the animals from a safe distance!
One of the absolute highlights of the day was the family circus show. Full of energy and laughter, it featured juggling, acrobatics, and plenty of audience participation. The talented performers wowed both children and adults, and the circus workshops that followed gave kids the chance to try out some of the tricks themselves. It was wonderful to see their confidence grow as they learned balancing acts and simple juggling moves under the guidance of the friendly circus team. Adding to the magic, Bumblemore the Wizard—a stilt-walking performer—wandered through the gardens throughout the day, posing for photos and making children giggle with his towering hat and spells. He was a big hit with visitors of all ages!
For families planning to visit more than once, the Palace, Park & Gardens Annual Pass is excellent value. It includes year-round access to the palace, grounds, and seasonal events, while the Palace and Play Pass (£165 for a family of four) also includes unlimited entry to Adventure Play for a full year. With so much to explore—from the landscaped parkland and walled gardens to the ever-changing calendar of events—it’s well worth it.
Blenheim Palace’s calendar is always packed with family-friendly fun. Coming up soon is Christmas at Blenheim, featuring the famous illuminated trail through the gardens, a charming Christmas market, and a visit from Father Christmas himself. In spring, families can look forward to the Easter Eggstravaganza and more outdoor adventures in the grounds.
Blenheim Palace’s Haunted Half Term delivered a fantastic mix of entertainment, creativity, and adventure. While some activities were better suited to older children, there was still plenty for our toddler to enjoy—especially the adventure playground and the gentle storytelling sessions. The combination of spooky fun, imaginative play, and the stunning surroundings made it a brilliant family day out.
With its Annual Pass offering incredible value and a calendar full of exciting seasonal events, Blenheim Palace continues to be one of Oxfordshire’s best family destinations. We’ll definitely be back.
