Children’s Commissioner hears directly from Girlguiding members.
Dame Rachel de Souza DBE, the Children’s Commissioner for England, met with Girlguiding’s Advocate Panel and young members to discuss the growing pressures girls and young women face today. Joined by Girlguiding CEO Angela Salt, the meeting highlighted key challenges such as appearance pressures, sexual harassment, and rising misogyny.
Listening to girls’ experiences
The discussion focused on how societal expectations and stereotypes impact girls’ mental health and self-confidence. Girlguiding’s latest Girls’ Attitudes Survey revealed that 75% of girls aged 11–16 experience or witness sexism. Advocates shared personal stories about how these pressures affect their daily lives and how Girlguiding helps them build resilience and confidence.
Lucy, 17, an Advocate, explained:
“Girls often aren’t listened to about the issues that affect us most. The only way to change that is by letting us be part of the conversation.”
The Advocate Panel, made up of members aged 14–25, plays a crucial role in Girlguiding’s work. They engage with MPs, contribute to the organisation’s policy recommendations, and help shape its calls to government, such as those in its 2024 manifesto, For All Girls.
Empowering activities for young girls
Dame Rachel also participated in a modern Girlguiding unit meeting with the 100th Streatham Brownies. Together, they completed the “Positive Pebbles” activity, where girls reflected on overcoming challenges and decorated pebbles with affirmations.
Angela Salt, CEO of Girlguiding, emphasised the importance of giving girls a voice:
“Our mission is to help girls know they can do anything and give them hope for a brighter tomorrow. From leadership programmes to skill-building activities, Girlguiding empowers girls to thrive.”
Supporting girls to achieve their potential
Dame Rachel expressed her admiration their work:
“The girls I spoke to today are fantastic examples of why the government and politicians must listen to their views. We need to ensure every child feels heard, confident, and supported to achieve their potential.”
