Discover Children’s Story Centre in Stratford continues to lead the way in offering enriching, inclusive experiences for families and their recent Tiny Tales Takeover was no exception. A beautifully curated morning of theatre, storytelling and open-ended play, it struck just the right balance between engaging performances and space to explore.
We saw Spots and Stripes from the brilliant inclusive company Chicken Shed, a gentle, vibrant tale of difference and friendship, told through music, movement and warm, accessible storytelling. The performers clearly understood their young audience, creating a space where children could engage in their own way, whether quietly watching or joining in with enthusiasm.
Next was That’s Not My Dinosaur, a wonderfully pitched sensory experience that brought the popular Usborne book to life. With textured props and plenty of opportunities for tactile interaction, it was ideal for babies and toddlers and a real hit with families looking for a calmer, more immersive theatre experience.
After both performances, stay and play sessions kept the energy going, offering families a relaxed and sociable way to continue the fun. The Story Worlds play areas were a particular highlight – imaginative, immersive spaces designed around children’s books that encouraged open-ended play, role-playing, and discovery. From whimsical woodland dens to cosy reading corners, each area invited children to dive into their own stories.
What really makes Discover stand out, though, is its deep sense of community and commitment to accessibility. Through partnerships with local food banks and their sponsors, they regularly offer free tickets to families who might otherwise not be able to attend. They also support wider social enterprise initiatives, making sure culture and creativity are accessible to all. It’s thoughtful, inclusive work that reflects a genuine belief in the power of early learning and the arts.
Even when there’s no event on, Discover is still a wonderful place to visit. With books around every corner, a friendly café (complete with The Tiger Who Came to Tea seated at his own table) and high-quality play facilities both indoors and out, it’s a welcoming space where families can relax, explore, and make memories.
Discovery Children’s Centre’s Tiny Tales Takeover is a shining example of creative, inclusive programming. With excellent performances, inspiring play spaces – especially the much-loved Story Worlds and Story Garden – and a clear commitment to community, this is a place where imagination thrives.
