Raspberry Pi Foundation calls for free Code Club in every UK school and library

The Raspberry Pi Foundation urges schools and libraries across the UK to host free Code Clubs, empowering children with vital digital skills for a tech-driven future. With AI and coding becoming part of everyday life, the Foundation wants every child to have a chance to thrive through hands-on, creative tech experiences.

Parents back coding in schools

A recent survey by Opinium for the Raspberry Pi Foundation shows strong parental support. Sixty per cent of parents want their child to learn coding. Over half believe coding should remain compulsory up to GCSE level. However, 70% say their child still doesn’t learn coding in regular school lessons.

This growing demand highlights the need for more after-school opportunities like Code Club. The Raspberry Pi Foundation already supports 2,000 Code Clubs across the UK. These clubs run in schools, libraries, and community spaces, teaching children how to build games, apps, websites, and digital art using coding languages like Scratch, Python and HTML/CSS.

Code Club builds future-ready skills

Code Clubs offer more than just tech know-how. They build confidence, boost problem-solving and promote teamwork. Children explore coding creatively, making music, games, and animations while gaining life skills that support future careers.

Philip Colligan CBE, CEO of the Raspberry Pi Foundation, says: “Every young person deserves the chance to understand and create with digital tech. Code Club helps them gain vital skills for the age of AI.”

Free support to set up a Code Club

No experience in coding is needed to start a Code Club. The Foundation offers free training, ongoing support and hundreds of easy-to-follow projects for children and volunteers alike.

Teachers like Janine Kirk from King’s C of E Academy, Stoke-on-Trent, are already seeing the impact. “Code Club is inclusive, fun and builds confidence. I’ve now helped set up clubs in six other schools too.”
