Bathrooms of the Future – 60% of Homeowners Are Looking to Re-Design Their Bathrooms

The bathroom has become one of the favourite areas in the house in which to relax. A space in which to lock the door behind you and escape from stress and everyday worries. So, no real surprise to find that 60% of homeowners are looking to invest in and redesign their bathrooms, mainly in line with technological advances.

Statistics show that 60% of homeowners are planning on remodelling their master bathroom. With the invention (and inevitable popularity) of smart bathrooms, you have to wonder where smart technology will end.

A 2018 survey done on the Future of Retail by Walker Sands produced the following statistics from respondents:

  • 19% are interested in hands-free voice assistant access while showering
  • 13% wanted more voice-controlled options for hands-free commands while on the toilet
  • 14% already have voice assistant technology in their bathrooms

Innovation in this space. Foremost among the findings was that almost half (46%) of people reported that – of all rooms in their home – the bathroom is where they’re most excited to see technological innovation.

However, the major consideration when designing a bathroom is to accommodate for all needs – present and future. Can you even imagine what the bathroom of the future will be like? What characteristics would you like to see in it?

Futureproofing your bathroom by making it accessible to older people is a practical trend in modern bathroom design – possibly because more of us are now living in multi-generational households. Products such as low-slip floor tiles, lower level baths and furniture and accessories that are designed to make bathing easier for all can be incorporated into any scheme.

Future technology is not only aimed at creating authentic spaces of relaxation and wellness, but also therapeutic spaces in which technology affects moods, through colour, smells, sound and virtual reality. And in the near future: temperature, lighting, music, and height may be capable of being adjusted automatically depending on the user who is using the room.

It’s all about efficiency and making our lives easier, so there will be big improvements in making accessible, mobility and disabled / bespoke (dementia friendly) bathrooms. Also, who wouldn’t want their floors to warm up 30 minutes before they get out of bed on a cold morning?
