Congratulations! You’ve bought your first caravan. Owning a caravan opens a world of adventure. Whether it’s just you or you have the family in tow (no pun intended), to ensure your first time on the open road is a smooth one, there are a few things you need to know and consider.
Check your license
Different licenses mean you can drive (or tow) different vehicles, so be sure to check the details of your ‘van against what you’re legally allowed to drive or travel with. You don’t want your first trip halted before it’s even begun because you don’t have the correct driving license.
Tow with caution
First-time towing can be a daunting experience, so don’t be afraid to do a few trial runs close to home so you feel confident behind the wheel. Acceleration and braking are different when towing a caravan in comparison to when you’re not, as are speed limits and road rules. Familiarise yourself with these before you embark on your travels. You can also check out our handy guide on our website here which can help you work out what your car can tow safely.
Hitching up
You’ll soon become a pro at hitching and unhitching your ‘van but it does take practice. Be clear on the process and how your ‘van couples with your vehicle and equipment before you set off from your home.
Create a check list
There will be certain things you want to take on your trip and then certain things you need to take on your trip. Making a list will ensure you don’t forget any of the essentials or must-haves. This will also help you when it comes to packing for your trip. You’ll want to make sure you evenly distribute the weight of your caravan and that heavier items are central to your caravan axle.
Plan ahead with pitching
Know your route and where you’re planning to pitch up and park overnight in advance. Most caravan parks require you to pre-book your stay, so look at the sites and find the one/s that meet your requirements and needs and book in advance to avoid any problems on arrival. Most sites offer fresh water and wastewater connections, Wi-Fi and electricity, but make sure to check when making your booking arrangements as to whether your pitch has this access. These services will make your experience feel much more like a home away from home.
If you’re nervous about pitching up and positioning your ‘van correctly for the first time on a site, don’t be afraid to speak to your caravan site neighbours or staff. The caravan community is a friendly and welcoming one and you’ll be surprised how many people will be happy to help.
To awn or not to awn
Awning can offer you double the living space on your holiday if you choose to have one. Which one you choose depends on what you want to use it for and how often. If you’re planning to use it for most of your holiday and on every holiday, we recommend choosing one with the best quality fabric and frame within your price range. If you’re only going to use it occasionally, a lighter, less expensive option. We have a huge range of awnings, both new and used full and porch awnings which you can view on our website, or visit us at the Caravan, Motorhome & Holiday Show at Manchester Central from 16-19 January and we’d be more than happy to talk through options with you!
Enjoy the experience
A caravan holiday provides a wonderful opportunity to explore areas close to home and further afield, all within the comfort of your own space. Whether you simply want to relax on site around a campfire or BBQ or wish to explore the local landscapes on a hike, a caravan holiday lets you enjoy and reconnect.
